Higher levels survive damage but make the code denser. A logo raises it to the highest level automatically.

Empty space around the code, in modules. Scanners need at least 4 for reliable reading.

How to make a WiFi QR code

  1. Type the network's name exactly as a phone lists it, with its capital letters and spaces.
  2. Choose the security: WPA/WPA2/WPA3 for most networks, WEP for old equipment, or “Open network” if it has no password.
  3. Type the Wi-Fi password. If the network does not show in the list, tick “Hidden network”.
  4. Design it in your colours with a frame such as “Scan to connect”, then download and print it.

How a guest scans it

  • On an iPhone: point the camera at the code and tap what appears.
  • On Android: the camera or Google Lens. Many phones also have a scan button in the Wi-Fi settings, next to “Add network”.
  • On a laptop: open the QR code scanner in the browser and scan it with the camera; it shows the network's name and password.

If an old phone does not read it, a software update may be enough, or any QR code reader from the app store.

Where it is used

  • On café and restaurant tables, instead of every guest asking for the password.
  • In the waiting room of a clinic or a salon.
  • In a furnished flat or a guest house, by the door.
  • In an office and its meeting room, for the visitors' network.
  • At home for your guests, in a small frame next to the router.
  • At a fair, a conference or in a classroom.

Before you hang it

  • Write the network's name under it, and the password too if you like, for anybody who cannot scan.
  • Test the printed copy on an iPhone and an Android phone before printing the whole run.
  • Put it where guests sit, at eye level, not behind the till.
  • A table code can be small; a sign on the wall needs to be larger.

Always static: know this before printing

A Wi-Fi code is always static, free and needs no account, and a phone reads it even offline. So a new password or network name means printing a new code. It does not count among your editable codes.

Anybody who scans it can see the password, so make it for the guests' network, not the one your tills and devices are on.

Questions about a WiFi QR code

How do I scan a WiFi QR code on Android?

Open the camera or Google Lens, point it at the code, and tap what appears to join. Many phones also have a button to scan a code in the Wi-Fi settings, next to “Add network”.

Can a laptop connect with a WiFi QR code?

Most laptops cannot read it by themselves. Scan it with the laptop's camera in the QR code scanner: the network's name and password appear as text, and you type them in.

I scanned it and it did not connect. Why?

Mostly one of three things: the network's name is not typed exactly, the security type chosen does not match the network's, or the password changed after printing.

How do I find my network's security type?

It is in the router's settings. Most networks today are WPA2 or WPA3, and both are covered by the first option.

Do you keep the password?

No. A code you create without an account is never stored. Privacy notice

What size should I print?

A Wi-Fi code holds more than a code with a short link, so its squares are smaller. Work out the size from the distance it will be scanned from.
