Every kind of code
How it works
- Choose the country, then type the number that receives the messages. Spaces and dashes do no harm: we drop them and keep the digits.
- Add the message if you like, such as a word to vote with or “I would like to book”. It appears already written for the person who scans.
- Design the code in your colours and with your logo, and download it.
- Scan it with your phone before printing, and check that the message opens to the right number.
Where it is used
- A competition or a vote at an event: “Text YES”.
- A sign on a shop or a building site: “Text CALL ME and we will ring you back”.
- Confirming attendance at an invitation or an appointment.
- Reporting a repair in a building or an office, with the flat or room number in the message.
- A place with weak internet, such as a work site or a road: a text message travels over the mobile network.
What people see when they scan it
Their messages app opens a text to your number with your message in it. They change it and tap “Send” themselves, charged like any text.
A static code works offline; an editable one needs internet at the moment of the scan.
Tips that make it work
- Write above the code what will happen, such as “Scan to text us”, so nobody is surprised by the messages app.
- If your number accepts set keywords, for a vote or a sign-up, write the word in the message exactly as your system expects it.
- Send a test yourself from two phones before printing, and check the message arrived.
- A short message scans from further away. Work out the size
Text message or WhatsApp?
A text reaches every phone with no app and no data, so it suits people without WhatsApp and places with weak signal. WhatsApp fits better if you answer customers there, and allows photos and a location: WhatsApp code.
If the number or the message changes
The code from this page is static, free and needs no account, so if the number or message changes you print a new code. Keep the message short.
Kept in your account, you change the number or message without reprinting, and see how often it was scanned. The free plan keeps 3 codes editable, for good. Static and editable codes compared
Questions about an SMS QR code
Is the message sent by itself?
No. It opens ready to send in the messages app, and the person who scanned it taps “Send” themselves.
Who pays for the message?
The sender, according to their phone plan, like any text they send.
Does it work on iPhone and Android?
Yes. The camera on recent iPhones and Android phones reads it and opens the messages app, with no other app.
Is the message text required?
No. The number alone is enough: it opens a blank message to that number.
Can I change the text after printing?
Not in a static code: the text is in the pattern, so you print a new code. If it is kept in your account, you change it and the printed code opens the new text.
