About Kuody

General questions

Is it really free?

Yes. Static codes are free, with no account and no mark of ours on the code. Scans of a static code do not pass through kuody.com, so nothing limits them.

Does the code expire?

A static code never expires. An editable one works as long as you keep it switched on and a plan covers it; the free plan covers 3 codes for good.

Does it work without the internet?

A static code for Wi-Fi, a contact or a text works offline. A code that opens a website, and every editable code, needs internet when it is scanned.

How small can I print it?

Make it about a tenth as wide as the scanning distance, so about 30 cm for a poster read from 3 m. Dark on a light background with a clear margin, and test a printed proof first. Downloading and printing

Which file do I give the printer?

SVG or PDF: they are vector files that stay sharp at any size. PNG is for screens and documents.

Can I put my logo in the middle?

Yes, and we arrange the code around it so it keeps scanning. If the content is too long for a logo, we tell you and draw the code without it.

Do you keep what I type?

No. A code you create without an account is never stored: no content, no file, no image. We only keep a count of requests per network for a short time, to limit abuse. Privacy notice

How do I get an account?

Create your account with your e-mail address, or with Google or Apple, in a minute. A link sent to your address lets you choose your password. Your shop's name is asked only when you make your first page.

Is a QR code the same as a barcode?

People often call it one, but they differ. A QR code is the square a phone camera reads, holding a link or a text; “QR” stands for quick response. The striped barcode on products is a product number for the till, and is not made here. What a QR code is

Questions about pricing

Is the free plan really free?

Yes, for good, not for a trial period: 3 codes you can edit, unlimited scans, no ads, and no card required. The difference you will notice: the pages this plan's codes open, a list of links for example, carry a small “Made with Kuody” line at the bottom, and their statistics show scan counts for the last 30 days.

When do I need a paid plan?

When you need more than 3 codes that are editable, or full statistics (countries, cities and devices, a year back, with export), or pages without the “Made with Kuody” line, or more than one user in the account, or forms through which visitors send you their feedback and ratings, or a password, dates and countries for your codes. The tools for branches and tables come with the Grow plan and those above it.

I have more than one business. Does each need a plan?

No. One plan for your account covers all your businesses, and its limits are shared between them: codes, people and files count for the whole account, and someone who works in more than one business counts once. Each plan says how many businesses it holds; you add one from the plan page, and upgrade when yours is full. Only the account holder pays and changes the plan.

How do I pay?

Create an account, choose “Subscribe” under a plan, and pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay on Stripe's secure page, so your card details never reach us. Monthly or yearly, as you like.

Can I cancel, and do I get my money back?

You cancel at any time from your account's plan page, and the plan stays until the end of the period you paid for. Your first payment is refunded in full if you ask within 14 days of making it, once for your account, and the codes beyond the free plan are then paused that day. Otherwise, once the subscription ends, the codes beyond the free plan keep working for 90 days, then pause until a plan covers them again, and nothing is deleted. The rest is under “Payment, renewal and refunds”.

Is there a limit on scans on any plan?

No. Scans are unlimited on every plan, the free one included. The limits are on businesses, editable codes, people and file storage, with a high ceiling on static codes against flooding. A limit refuses adding, and above it editing stops: it deletes nothing. What happens to the codes above a plan when a subscription ends is under “What happens if you stop paying?”.

Does a new free account have other limits?

Yes, for its first 7 days only, to keep fraud off the service: on its first day it makes at most 3 editable codes, deleted ones included, and 10 in those days in all, and it changes where they lead 5 times on its first day, then 10 times a day. After that, or on any paid plan, only the plan's limits apply.

Questions about QR code design

Can a phone read a coloured code, or one with a logo?

Yes, as long as the dots are dark on a light background, with strong contrast between them. With a logo, a space is cleared for it in the middle and error correction is raised, so the code still reads.

Can the background be dark and the dots light?

No: many cameras cannot read an inverted code, so the page does not accept one, nor two colours too close together.

Is the design free?

Yes. Every colour, shape, logo and frame is free on this page, with no account and no watermark.

Which format do I send to the printer?

SVG or PDF: they scale up without losing sharpness. PNG is for screens and posts.

Can I save my design and use it for all my codes?

Yes, in your account: save the design as a template and make it the default design for every new code in your organization.

Most used

Is turning a link into a QR code really free?

Yes. The static code from this page is free, needs no account, has no watermark and never expires. An editable one lives in a free account, which keeps 3 codes editable, for good.

How do I turn a link into a QR code on my phone?

Open this page in your phone's browser, paste the link and download the code. You need no app.

Does the code expire or stop?

A static code never expires and works for as long as your link does. An editable one works while your plan covers it, and the free plan covers 3 codes for good. What happens if you stop paying is on the pricing page.

My link is long. Is that a problem?

The longer the link, the denser the code, and the larger it must be printed. An editable code stays simple however long your link. Work out the right size

Do you keep the link I type?

No. A code you create without an account is never stored. Privacy notice

How do I know it scans before I print?

Scan it from the screen with your phone first, then check its image before printing, and try one printed copy before the whole run.

Questions about a digital menu

Does the guest need an app?

No. They point their phone's camera at the code and the page opens in the browser.

Is the digital menu free?

The menu comes with the Grow plan and those above it, and its page carries no “Made with Kuody” line. A ready menu in PDF goes in a PDF QR code on the free plan. Branches and tables come with the Grow plan and those above it.

Can I add a photo to each item?

Yes, if you like: you upload it from your phone, up to 8 MB per photo. Photos help a guest choose faster.

I already have a menu as a PDF. Can I use it?

Yes, with a PDF code: you upload the file and replace it whenever it changes. But a menu page is easier for a guest to read than a file.

What happens to the menu if I stop paying?

Nothing is deleted. The printed code keeps opening the menu while a plan covers it, and for 90 days after a subscription ends, unless its first payment was refunded. The details are on the pricing page.

Can I see a menu before I open an account?

The page for restaurants and cafés explains what the guest sees and what you see.

Questions about a WhatsApp QR code

Does it work with WhatsApp Business?

Yes. The code opens a chat with the number, whether it is on WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business.

Does the customer see my number?

Yes, as in any WhatsApp chat. Use the shop's number, not your own.

Is the message sent by itself?

No. It is filled into their message box, and they can change it before sending it themselves.

And if the customer's phone has no WhatsApp?

The link opens WhatsApp's page in the browser, which offers to download the app.

Is this the WhatsApp Web QR code?

No. You scan the WhatsApp Web code with your phone to open WhatsApp on a computer. This one you print, so people can open a chat with you.

Is a WhatsApp QR code free?

Yes. The static code from this page is free, with no account, and never expires. An editable one lives in a free account, which keeps 3 codes editable, for good.

Questions about a WiFi QR code

How do I scan a WiFi QR code on Android?

Open the camera or Google Lens, point it at the code, and tap what appears to join. Many phones also have a button to scan a code in the Wi-Fi settings, next to “Add network”.

Can a laptop connect with a WiFi QR code?

Most laptops cannot read it by themselves. Scan it with the laptop's camera in the QR code scanner: the network's name and password appear as text, and you type them in.

I scanned it and it did not connect. Why?

Mostly one of three things: the network's name is not typed exactly, the security type chosen does not match the network's, or the password changed after printing.

How do I find my network's security type?

It is in the router's settings. Most networks today are WPA2 or WPA3, and both are covered by the first option.

Do you keep the password?

No. A code you create without an account is never stored. Privacy notice

What size should I print?

A Wi-Fi code holds more than a code with a short link, so its squares are smaller. Work out the size from the distance it will be scanned from.

More on the page: Wi-Fi

Questions about a Google review QR code

Where do I find the review link?

In your Business Profile on Google: search for your shop's name while signed in to your account, choose to ask for reviews, and copy the link.

The review link or the Place ID?

The link if you can: it opens the review box directly. The Place ID opens your shop's page on the map, with the review button one tap away.

Does the customer need a Google account?

Yes. Google accepts a review only from a signed-in account; that is its rule, not ours.

Can I show only the good reviews?

No. The code opens the review box for everybody who scans it, and we do not filter customers before they reach it: Google's policies forbid that.

I have several branches. One code, or one each?

One for each branch: each has its own page on Google Maps and its own reviews.

Is a QR code for Google reviews free?

Yes. The static code from this page is free, with no account, and never expires. An editable one lives in a free account, which keeps 3 codes editable, for good.

Questions about a social media QR code

I want a code for one account only, say Instagram. What do I do?

Use an Instagram QR code: it opens your account directly, free and without an account. TikTok, Snapchat, YouTube, X and Facebook each have a code of their own too.

Does the person scanning need an app?

No. The page opens in the browser, and each button opens the account, on many phones in the platform's app if it is installed.

Does the page come in my shop's colours?

Yes. You set your shop's branding once in the account (a logo and a colour), and all your pages use it.

Is it free?

Yes, on the free plan: it keeps 3 codes editable, for good, and this code is one of them. Its page carries a small “Made with Kuody” line at the bottom.

How is it different from a link in bio?

This page is for accounts, with each platform's icon. A link in bio is a page of links to anywhere, with labels you write, and it has its own type of code: the link list.

Questions about a PDF QR code

Is turning a PDF into a QR code free?

Yes, in a free account. It keeps 3 codes editable, for good, and the file's code is one of them.

How large can the file be?

Up to 20 MB per file. All your uploaded files together share the storage your plan gives you.

How do I turn a PowerPoint or Word file into a QR code?

Upload it as it is, as pptx or docx, and an Excel file as xlsx. If it must look the same on every phone, save it as a PDF first with “Save as” or “Export”.

Does the person scanning need an app to read the file?

They need no app from us. Their phone opens the file in whatever PDF reader it has.

My file is a restaurant's menu. Is this the right kind of code?

It works, but a menu code suits it better: a page made for phones, where you can change a price without uploading a new file.

Who can open the file?

Anybody who scans the code or is given its link. Do not upload a file you do not want people to see.

No, on any plan. There is no advertisement and no page between the scan and the menu, except a warning while our team reviews a report about the code.

Who edits the menu?

Questions about a location QR code

Does the person scanning need the Google Maps app?

Does it work on an iPhone?

Yes, with a Google Maps link. “geo:” coordinates are for Android's maps apps, so choose the link if you do not know which phones will scan it.

Pages we build for you

Questions about a real-estate listing QR code

Do you issue the advertisement licence?

No. We neither issue licences nor check them. You enter the licence number and its expiry date as they appear on your licence, and the page shows them first.

What do people see after the licence has ended?

A page saying the advertisement has ended, with the licence number and its expiry date, and nothing else. The full listing stays up until the licence's last day.

The licence was renewed. Do I print a new sign?

No. Enter the new date on the page and it comes back as it was; the same printed code opens it.

Which phone number do I give?

The same one you gave when you applied for the advertisement licence. Add a WhatsApp number too and the page shows a chat button.

Do I need a code for every sign?

You do not have to, but it helps: extra codes open the same page, and each counts its own scans, so you see which sign is scanned most.

What if the plan no longer has listings?

The listings you made keep working and you can still edit them. A new one needs a plan with the listing tool.

More on the page: Real-estate listing

Do I put the link or the code in my bio?

The link in your bio, the code on what you print. Both open the same page.

Yes, on the free plan. It is an editable code, so it counts towards the 3 codes that plan keeps editable.

Do visitors need an app?

Does the page show my brand's colours?

Yes. You set your brand once in your account (a logo and a colour), and all your pages use it.

I only have one link. Do I need a page?

No. A link QR code opens the link directly.

More on the page: Link list

Questions about an image QR code

How many pictures can one code hold?

The code itself sets no limit. What limits it is the file storage your plan gives you, and each picture can be up to 8 MB.

Does the person scanning need an app?

No. The pictures open on a page in their phone's browser.

Is an image QR code free?

Yes, in a free account. The free plan keeps 3 codes editable, for good.

Why do I need an account for it?

Because pictures do not fit inside a code's pattern. The pictures are kept in your account, and the code holds a link to them.

Can I change the pictures after printing?

Yes. You add or remove pictures in your account, and the printed code opens the gallery as it now is.

More on the page: Image gallery

Questions about an invitation and event QR code

Does a guest need an internet connection?

Not for a static code: the date is inside the pattern. An editable one opens the event page, which needs a connection.

Can guests confirm they are coming?

Not on the page itself. An editable code can add a WhatsApp button to it, with a ready message such as “I will be there”, which the guest sends to you.

The date changed after printing. What do I do?

If the code is editable, change the date in your account, and anyone who scans from then on sees the new one. Guests who added it to their calendar before keep the old date, so tell them. If it is static, print a new code.

In which time zone does the time show?

It is saved in the time zone you entered it in, and each guest's calendar shows it in their own, so it stays correct wherever the guest is.

Is it free?

Yes. A static code is free from this page with no account, and an editable one counts towards the 3 codes the free plan keeps editable.

Yes. Change the expiry date in your account, and the code and the button reappear.

Can I use a landline or a customer service number?

Yes, any number that can be called. Choose its country from the list and type it as you dial it there.

I want customers to message me on WhatsApp, not call.

This code starts a phone call. For a ready chat use a WhatsApp code, and for a text message an SMS code.

My number changed after printing. What now?

A static code carries the old number, so you print a new one. If it is kept in your account, you change the number and the printed code calls the new one.

Can I attach a file?

No. The code carries the address, subject and text only, and the sender attaches what they like. To hand people a file, use a PDF code.

Can I add my photo and accounts?

Not with this type of code. A photo and accounts go in a business card code.

Questions about a MECARD QR code

What is MECARD?

A compact format for storing a contact in a QR code: name, phone, e-mail, website, address and a note, with shorter labels than vCard.

Can every phone read it?

Most recent phone cameras read it. Test it on the phones you expect people to use before printing, and if in doubt choose a vCard.

Where do I put my job title?

MECARD has no field for it. Write it in the note, or choose a vCard, which has a field for the title and another for the company.

Does the person scanning need an internet connection?

No. The details are in the pattern, and the phone reads and saves them offline.

Can I change the details after printing?

No. It is always static, so you print a new code.

More on the page: Contact (MECARD)

Forms and feedback

Questions about a feedback QR code

Does the customer need an app or an account?

No. They scan the code with their phone's camera, and a page opens in the browser where they write their feedback and send it.

Is the customer asked for a name or a number?

No. A feedback form asks for the message alone, and neither their IP address nor their browser details are stored with it. If you want a name and a number, use a lead form.

Who can read the feedback?

The members of your organization, in your account. It is not published anywhere.

What is the consent text?

Optional text you write, which the customer ticks to accept before sending. Say in it who receives their feedback and why. Each response keeps the text they agreed to.

Will I get spam from bots?

The form blocks automated submissions without making anyone pass an “I am not a robot” test, and there is a limit on how much one device can send and how much a code accepts in an hour.

And if the plan no longer has forms?

The printed code goes on taking feedback, which is kept and shows under “Responses” when the account is back on a plan with forms. No notification is sent meanwhile.

Questions about a rating QR code

Does the rating appear on Google?

No. It stays in your account and is not published. For a public review on Google, use a Google review QR code.

Is the comment required?

No. Choosing a star is required; the comment is optional. You can also hide the comment box altogether.

Can a customer rate more than once?

Each time the page is shown, it sends one rating; to send another, they go back to the form. And one device can only send so many in a few minutes.

Do I see the average rating?

Under “Responses” you see each rating with its score and comment. To work out the average, download them as an Excel or CSV file.

Who can see the ratings?

The members of your organization, in your account. Neither the customer's IP address nor their browser details are stored with a rating.

Questions about a lead form QR code

Where do the customers' details arrive?

Under “Responses” in your account, with the name of the code and the time they signed up. Only the members of your organization see them, and notifications never include them.

Can I move them into a spreadsheet or a CRM?

Yes. Download them as an Excel or CSV file from “Responses”. Owners and editors can download.

Do I have to ask for a phone number?

No, but you must ask for a phone number or an e-mail address, or both, so you can reply.

Is the customer's number verified?

We check that it looks like a phone number, and that the e-mail is a well-formed address. No verification code is sent to them.

Is anything kept besides what the customer wrote?

The consent text they agreed to, the page's language and the time it arrived. Neither their IP address nor their browser details are stored.

Will I get fake sign-ups from bots?

The form blocks automated submissions without making anyone pass an “I am not a robot” test, and there is a limit on how much one device can send and how much a code accepts in an hour.

Questions about a text QR code

Does the person scanning need an internet connection?

No. The text is inside the code, and a phone's camera reads it offline.

Can the text be in Arabic?

Yes, in Arabic, English or both. Arabic takes up more of the pattern, so keep it short.

My phone's camera did not show the whole text. Why?

Some cameras show the text cut short, or offer to search for it. Open the code in the QR code scanner and the whole text shows, with a button to copy it.

Can I change the text after printing?

No. A text code is static; to change it you print a new one.

Is it free?

Yes, from this page, with no account, and it never expires.

Questions about a crypto wallet QR code

Does the payment pass through Kuody?

No. The code carries only your address, and the payment goes from the payer's wallet straight to yours. We do not hold or move money.

Which currencies does it support?

Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Litecoin (LTC) and Bitcoin Cash (BCH).

Do you check that the address is right?

We check that its shape matches the chosen currency's addresses, not that it exists or that it is yours. Check it yourself in your wallet app.

In which currency is the amount?

In units of the cryptocurrency you chose, not your local currency. The amount is optional.

What should people scan it with?

With their wallet app, whose scanner fills in the address. A phone's camera may only show the text.

Can I change the address after printing?

No. This code is always static, so you print a new one.

Questions about size

How do I make the code smaller without weakening it?

Make it hold less. An editable code holds a short link however long your own link is, so it has fewer and larger squares. Editable and static codes

Is bigger always better?

For scanning from afar, yes. From very close, a very large code does not fit in the camera's view: a code on a table does not need to be as wide as a whole sheet.

Which file do I print from?

SVG or PDF: they stay sharp at any size. Once the designer has placed the code in the artwork, check the image before printing.

Questions about the check

Which picture do I choose?

The file that goes to the printer once the designer has placed the code in it, exported as a picture. Most of what weakens a code happens in the artwork: shrinking it, changing its colours, or pushing it against the edge.

What is the error correction level?

How much damage or covering a code can take and still scan. There are four levels: L, M, Q and H, from lowest to highest; H withstands the most and is what a logo in the middle needs.

Does it check a code that was not made with Kuody?

Yes. It checks any QR code, whoever made it.

Questions about the scanner

Why does the browser ask to use the camera?

To read the code from it. The camera runs only while you are on the scanner's page, and stops when the code is read or you leave. You can choose a picture instead.

Does it read the striped barcodes on products?

Yes, it reads the common kinds of linear barcode too, and shows the number as text.

My phone reads codes with its camera. Why would I need this?

To read a code in a picture or a screenshot, or on a computer, or when you want to see the whole link before it opens.

Questions about the test sheet

Is an office printer enough?

For a first try, yes. For a large run or a special material, glossy stickers or packaging for example, ask the printer for a proof on the material itself.

My code is kept in my account. How do I test its size?

Open the code's page in your account, press “Download”, then “Test sheet (PDF)”: the same page of every size, for the code as it is saved.

Every size was read. Which do I choose?

The smallest is enough if the customer scans from close by, as with a code on a table. If it will be scanned from afar, try from that distance, not from arm's length.
