How to turn text into a QR code

  1. Type or paste your text in the box above: a sentence, a message, a few lines.
  2. Design the code in your colours, and with your logo if you like.
  3. Download it and print it. Whoever scans it with their phone's camera sees the text as you wrote it, and can copy it.
  4. Test it before printing: scan it with your phone, or open its picture in the QR code scanner.

How much text fits?

The text is inside the code itself, so every character makes it denser. The box takes a short paragraph, but the shortest codes scan most easily. Arabic takes more room than English.

A long text printed small? Find the smallest size that scans with the size calculator. For longer texts such as manuals, use a PDF QR code.

It works without internet

No link and no page, just the text itself. So it scans with no signal, in a warehouse, a basement or out in the desert, never stops working, and never passes through us. Any phone reads it today and years from now.

So the text reads as you mean it

  • Write it the way it should be read: short lines and clear punctuation.
  • Do not put a password or anything private in it: whoever scans the code reads it.
  • Want a link? Use a link QR code, which the camera opens directly.
  • Print it dark on a light background, with an empty margin around it.

Where it is used

  • A thank-you note or a dedication inside a gift box.
  • Short instructions on a device or a machine: how to start it, or the service number.
  • An item number or a list of contents on a box in the warehouse.
  • A clue or a question in a treasure hunt or a school activity.
  • A verse, a saying or a line of poetry on a print or a card.
  • A sign on a room or an office door: who works there and when.
  • A hidden message in a game, or in a present for a child.

Fixed once printed

A text code is static, free and needs no account, so it cannot change after printing, and its scans cannot be counted. Static and editable codes, compared

Questions about a text QR code

Does the person scanning need an internet connection?

No. The text is inside the code, and a phone's camera reads it offline.

Can the text be in Arabic?

Yes, in Arabic, English or both. Arabic takes up more of the pattern, so keep it short.

My phone's camera did not show the whole text. Why?

Some cameras show the text cut short, or offer to search for it. Open the code in the QR code scanner and the whole text shows, with a button to copy it.

Can I change the text after printing?

No. A text code is static; to change it you print a new one.

Is it free?

Yes, from this page, with no account, and it never expires.
