How to turn a number into a QR code
- Choose the country, then type the number, so it can be called from anywhere. Spaces and dashes do no harm: we drop them and keep the digits.
- Design the code in your colours and with your logo, or leave it black on white.
- Download the code, and scan it with your own phone before printing to make sure the number is right.
- Write what it does next to it, such as “Scan to call”, so people know what to expect.
Where it is used
- On the shop door while it is closed: “Call us to order”.
- On a car for sale, or a “To let” sign on a flat.
- On the delivery car, the order bag and the receipt.
- In a holiday flat or guest house: the host's number by the door.
- On keys, luggage and a pet's collar: whoever finds them calls you.
- In a printed advertisement or an event booklet: the booking number.
What happens when it is scanned
A static code carries the number in its pattern. The phone's camera reads it on its own, with no app and no internet, and offers to call the number.
An editable code opens a small page with a “Call” button, so it needs internet at the moment of the scan.
Either way, the person sees the number and taps to call. To give your name, number and e-mail together, use a vCard QR code.
Before you print
- A number with + and its country code works from anywhere. A local number without one may not reach you from abroad.
- A phone code is simple, so it scans even when small. Work out the size
- Use a number that is answered during working hours, or the customer service line, not your private one.
- Print it where people stand or wait: by the door, on the table, at the till. Nobody scans a sign that cars drive past at speed.
- If you have two numbers, say bookings and customer service, give each its own code and write above each what it is for.
- If the number may change, say a member of staff moves on or you get a new line, keep the code in an account from the start.
If the number changes
The code from this page is static, free, needs no account, and never expires. If the number changes, you print a new code.
Kept in your account, you change the number without reprinting, and see how often it was scanned. The free plan keeps 3 codes editable, for good. Static and editable codes compared
Questions about a phone number QR code
Does the phone dial as soon as it scans the code?
No. The number shows with the option to call, and the person who scanned it taps it themselves.
Does it work on iPhone and Android?
Yes. The camera on recent iPhones and Android phones reads it with no app.
Can I use a landline or a customer service number?
Yes, any number that can be called. Choose its country from the list and type it as you dial it there.
I want customers to message me on WhatsApp, not call.
This code starts a phone call. For a ready chat use a WhatsApp code, and for a text message an SMS code.
My number changed after printing. What now?
A static code carries the old number, so you print a new one. If it is kept in your account, you change the number and the printed code calls the new one.
